Scripture Union Daily Guide – 28th July 2025 – OUTLINE
The story in this passage is horrifying and offensive in so many ways. When morality is thrown to the winds, lawlessness and all sorts of wickedness thrive. This was the pathetic situation of Israel particularly, the Benjamites in Gibeah. Without king or a prophet, the Israelites became morally bankrupt. At Gibeah, the Levite was ignored and abandoned in the public square (Judges 19:15,28). However, a sojourner, an old man came to his aid (Judges 19:20-21). Have you ever felt ignored and abandoned in a critical moment of need? How did you feel? How have you been responding to others in critical situations and needs around you?
It’s not over; the worst was yet to come! What do you consider the worst treatment in Judges 19:23-29? The host was justifiably frightened, and casually offered his daughter to a gang of rapists. The Levite’s actions were even more disturbing. The woman was “given” and “taken,” regardless of her wishes. The woman’s story is profoundly sad. This is a bad example of how women and girls are treated in some communities. This must be condemned.
And So
Compare your nation to what happened in Israel. Are we better off? What roles can the Church play to address the prevalent moral decay and maltreatment of women in society?
