Scripture Union Daily Guide 28 July 2020
Topic: Wise counsel? Prompt Action ? Great Rejoicing
Opening Prayer: Make my life oh Lord a reflection of you as I study your word.
Scripture: 1 Kings 1:22–40
Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Message: This was a period of national political crisis for Israel. In such moments, all believers should make earnest intercession to God on behalf of the country. In addition, however, some are called by God to become directly and actively involved to redress the situation. Such was Nathan’s role in this episode (vv.22–27).
Nathan has always distinguished himself as a wise man who gives the right counsel with godly wisdom. (Did you notice that from yesterday’s Further study section?) Through his action, king David was helped to understand the seriousness of the situation. For what can we commend King David from vv.28–30? We need leaders who will not just verbally resolve issues but take practical action and set things in motion and in order (vv.32–35).
Take time to compare vv.5 and 7–9 with vv.38–40. What are the main differences between the ceremonies surrounding Adonijah and Solomon? The anointing oil (v.39) is usually a symbol of God’s Holy Spirit. Without him all else would be empty show. When the right thing was done, there was great rejoicing among the people (v.40).
