TOPIC: Your Will Be Done
Opening Prayer: I open my heart to meditate on your word, teach me your ways oh Lord.
Scripture: Matthew 26:31-46
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
Jesus never hides painful truth from his disciples (vs.31, 34). And so, we must be plain on matters of truth too. Examine Peter’s assertions in vs.33&35. Were they humble or arrogant resolutions considering Jesus’ response in v. 34 cf. Luke 22; 31 – 34? It is important that we are determined to follow the Lord at all costs. We must, however, do this in total dependence on His strength, not our self-ability (1 Sam. 2: 9b; John 15: 4 – 5; Philippians 4:13).
Christian leaders must follow the example of Jesus in vs.36-38. He still took Peter along despite his knowledge that Peter would fail to keep his bold promises (vs.33,35). Good mentoring involves training with patience and tolerance. What does Jesus’ statement in v.38 show about His personality as a man? Notice His approach to difficult and overwhelming situations in vs.39,42 and 44. What basic principles can we learn from the way he prayed here? Jesus knew that the human nature is resistant to God’s will and cannot please God in itself (vs.38, 40-41, 43, 45). Hence, in His human nature, He prayed that God’s will, not His, be done. How much more do we need to pray at every moment, for God’s will to be done in our lives!
Practice/Word Application
• And So? Let us take seriously the warning in vs.40-41 because the days are evil, and the end is drawing near. Read Romans 13:11-14.
