Scripture Union Daily Guide 26th June 2023 MESSAGE:
The passage highlights the debts that we should owe. The first is the debt of love while the other is discerning the times. Jesus reminds us that the greatest commandment is to love God wholeheartedly and our neighbour as ourselves. Can we ever learn this lesson? True love will silence the guns of violent and bitter conflict across the continent of Africa faster than political agreement or military intervention. Land and chieftaincy tussles, ethnic rivalry, slavery, child marriages, oppression, kidnapping, ritual killings, and exploitation will give way to peace. This kind of love results from a transformed life.
These evils lead to darkness. Darkness and love cannot co-exist. How would our societies look like when we overcome darkness (see list above) with the love that Paul teaches here (vs.11-12)? Notice the solution he offers as we seek a better society (v.14).
Contrary to the works of darkness, we are to clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ (v.14) – to put on His righteousness, hate sin with His passion and let Him become the Lord and ruler of our lives. Christ is the light of the world and with Him in charge of our lives; we can no longer enjoy engaging in those sinful works of darkness.
