Scripture Union Daily Guide 26th January 2021 Message:
War is a sad tragedy involving large scale destruction of property and human life. Like all countries in those days, Israel did not have a professional standing army. Every able-bodied man automatically became a soldier when it was time for war. Who was leading their army into battle, (v.4)? Here we see the ground rules that God lays down for Israel concerning both their own army and the way they should treat their enemies. Take note of those who were exempted from war, (vs. 5-8) and the reasoning in each case.
Remember, this was the time that Israel was on the way to the Promised Land. There were two types of enemies they had to deal with: those who wanted to hinder their journey (vs.10-15), and those whose lands they were going to possess, (vs.16-18). What were the differences in the way they were to treat the two? What was the reason given for wiping out the people of the land, (v.18)?
Practice/Word Application
• For meditation. What connection do you see between vs.16-18 here and Matthew 18:6?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace, please bring your peace to our warring nations • Pray for your Pastor and other Church leaders to be effective in ministry: clarity of message, courage to be scriptural, power of the Holy Spirit and exemplary life style
Offer a prayer of faith in line with
• 1sa. 11-13; Mark 4:1-20
