INTRODUCTION TO GENESIS
Although there are several centuries between the time of the Patriarchs and Moses, it is generally believed that Moses wrote Genesis, possibly from the oral stories passed down through the years or from a now non‐existent early written record. Genesis focuses on the theme of creation, sin, and re‐creation.
God created a perfect world but destroyed it because of man’s sin and disobedience (Chapter 7). The new world after the Flood was again corrupted by human sin (Chapter 11). God’s call of and covenant with Abraham (Chapter 12) gives the hope that God will accomplish His good purposes through his descendants (Chapter 49) since all the nations of the earth were to be blessed through Abraham.
It is believed that Genesis (and the rest of the Pentateuch – the first five books) was written for the Israelites while they were in the wilderness, either those that left Egypt or their children. May this study give us fresh insight into our existence!
Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 26 March 2022 MESSAGE
The book of Genesis starts with the phrase, ”In the beginning, God”. The writer does not attempt to define God. By faith, humans should understand God to be the One who made the heavens and the earth. “He is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King” (Jeremiah 10:10).
In Jeremiah 10:11 the prophet declares that “the gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens”. In vs.1‐2 it is worthy of note that we are not informed how long it took Almighty God to create the heavens and the earth.
Scientific study suggests that the earth is about 4.5 billion years old. Note also the presence of the Spirit of God at creation. From vs.3‐19, what did God introduce into creation to bring it to the ordered form we are seeing today, and how did God cause that to be? Notice the repeated statement “And God said” in today’s passage.
Note also the other expressions, “God made”, “God called”, and “God saw that it was good”. Our God is active, and He loves and appreciates beauty.
