Opening Prayer: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.
Scripture: Matthew 14:13-21
Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit? • Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Jesus’ compassion (v.14): Did Jesus withdraw to a solitary place to avoid confrontation with wicked Herod knowing that His ‘time is not yet come’ (John 7:6), or was this, as was His normal practice, to have quality time in private prayers? Whatever the reason, notice His response to the crowd (v.14). Our Lord is compassionate (Exodus 34:6). We see it through the scriptures and hopefully in our lives too. In a way, this tired, hungry crowd represents us all.
There are moments when we think there is no hope and we might faint for lack of nourishment. Let us always remember that our God is full of compassion and He will nourish, refresh and fill us as we turn to Him. He is deeply concerned about both our physical and spiritual needs.
The Church needs to show compassion and cater for people’s physical, spiritual, social and mental needs. What was available could hardly feed a man. They placed it in Jesus hand, and he multiplied it to feed the crowd. God asked Moses what was in his hand. His ordinary rod handed over to God became a miracle working rod (Exodus 4:2-4). Our Lord can use our little possession and strength to achieve the impossible (see Zechariah 4:6).
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• O Lord, please help me to see the need of the people around me and to seek to meet them. • Pray for deeper knowledge in your studies.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with
• Eccle. 7-9; Rev. 12
