Scripture Union Daily Guide 24 June 2024 Outline:
In the Old Testament, any discharge from an individual makes the person ceremonially unclean. Hence having so much flow of blood after childbirth makes the woman ceremonially unclean and she must go through purification ritual to be ceremonially clean again. Note that the woman’s ceremonial uncleanness is not on moral ground. Hence the relationship between the woman and God is not affected.
This is even true in the New Testament covenant that we enjoy today. The blood of Jesus has made us acceptable to God at any time and in the way we are.
Notice how long the purification takes if the baby was a boy compared with the duration if she was a girl (vs.3-5)? There is no clear reason in this passage to explain the difference between the two sexes. But it has some good implication for the health of both mother and child.
Vs.6-8 is a good reminder to us that despite their parentage, all children are born sinners, and must make personal decision to trust the Lord for salvation one day (Psalm 51:5).
Also notice the provision that was made for the poor. The gifts were based on the ability of the individual (see Luke 2:22-24). God does not expect us to borrow or steal to give to Him. Compare this with some of the activities we organise in our churches to mark various occasions.
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Lord, we thank you for your concern, love and care for our mothers and children.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 51:1
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.”
