INTRODUCTION TO MATTHEW
This Gospel was written by Matthew also known as Levi, the son of Alpheaus and a tax collector (Mark 2:14-17). His Gospel was written for a Jewish audience. It is believed to have been written between AD 60 and 75. Matthew wrote to present Jesus as the Messiah promised in the Old Testament and the fulfilment of Old Testament Messianic prophecies. Matthew proved this by tracing the genealogy of Jesus’ family back to Abraham, the father of the Jewish people, demonstrating that Jesus is the legitimate inheritor of David’s throne, and relating Jesus’ teaching to the Old Testament’s Laws.
Matthew has more quotations and allusions to the Old Testament than any other New Testament book. The central theme of Matthew’s Gospel is “the Kingdom of God”. As we study Matthew, we will learn that Jesus is the King. He has inaugurated the Kingdom and has commissioned us (His disciples) to take the good news of the Kingdom to the ends of the earth (Matthew 28:19).
Scripture Union Daily Guide 24 December 2025 Outline
Genealogies are no longer cherished in our times. Many of us do not know more than our nuclear families. But to the Jews, genealogies are very important. They have been waiting eagerly for the Messiah. But the question was, “Could Jesus, the son of a carpenter, be the long-expected Messiah?” Even in traditional African settings, when vying for leadership, the question is usually, “Who is your father?”
Read Matthew 1:1 again. This verse is a vital introduction to Jesus as truly Jewish. The promise of the Messiah was first made to Abraham who is the founding father of the Jews (Genesis 12:1; Genesis 22:18) and last to David (2 Samuel 7:16,18,19-27). While blessing his children in Genesis 49:10, Jacob also prophesies that the Messiah will be from the lineage of Judah (Matthew 1:2-3). This genealogy shows that God is faithful to His Promises.
How many women are included in this genealogy (Matthew 1:3,5,6,16)? These women and some men on the list are people of questionable character, birth, and humble backgrounds, but they found a place in the genealogy of the Messiah. What does this teach us?
And So
Despite the rottenness of your past, through faith in Christ, you can become a member of the family of God.
