TOPIC: Shine As Lights In The World

OPENING PRAYER: Oh Lord, grant me spiritual insight into the truth of your word as I study it.

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?

When believers follow the example of Christ in living a lifestyle of love and humility, they will shine as lights in the world. And that is exactly Paul’s desire for his Christian friends in Philippi. Notice the three areas in which this will manifest:

• Working out our salvation (v.12b): To put into action God’s saving work in our lives, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. Although salvation is God’s gift and received by faith, not by works (Ephesians 2:8), it must be evident by our lifestyle that God is working out the new life in us (Ephesians 2:10).

• Do everything without complaining, murmuring or arguing (v.14). Why? Read v.15.

• Uphold the Word of God (v.16). Why? See v.16b. True believers and real disciples of Christ continue to regularly study, practise, obey, and teach God’s word.

If we deal with our attitudes and conduct (v.14), we will then be lights shining in darkness; people of blameless conduct who take God’s message to the spiritually and morally corrupt world (v.15). How often we forget that the spiritually dark world is looking for the genuine alternatives that the Church has. It is not necessarily material things the world is looking for in the Church but Christ-like integrity.
