Opening Prayer: I open my heart to meditate on your word, teach me your ways oh Lord.
Lamentations 3:40–66
Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
Message: Do you notice that honest self–examination leads to honesty, humility and brokenness? This is what we observe in vv.40–42. Take note of the following words and phrases: examine, test, return to the Lord, lift hearts and hands to God in heaven, among others. Note also the subsequent acknowledgment of sin in v.42. Such a path leads to prayer, confession and a desire to align oneself with God in his righteousness (vv.43–45). Are there things you may need to re– examine and test in your life? Take a moment to do personal self–examination. The impact of rebellion and the accompanying discipline by God can be devastating (see vv.46–54). Yet, they provide a ripe opportunity to call on the name of the Lord (v.55).
What a great joy and relief that when we call upon him, he hears! He answers! He comes near! He takes up our case (vv.56–60)! And when this happens, we are able to talk to him as our Father and pour our hearts while taking refuge and finding consolation in the fact that we are reconciled back to him. We can make a case against our enemies before God and hand them over to him for his appropriate action or retribution. In which areas of life are you rebellious or facing God’s discipline? In what ways will you return to God?
