Scripture Union Daily Guide – 23 January 2026 | OUTLINE
The leaders of God’s people, both political and spiritual (including kings, pastors, and prophets) had misled the people and did not provide nurture, protection and guidance for them. Notice the accusation God levelled against these leaders in Jeremiah 23:1. Consider the attitude and behaviour of the priests and prophets in Jeremiah 23:11-14. They were likened to Sodom and Gomorrah. Is our experience in our churches today among the pastors, preachers, prayer warriors and prophets any different?
Notice what the Lord decided to do to the leaders; the severity of the judgment and punishment the Lord promises to mete out to them (Jeremiah 23:19-20). Similarly, God’s judgment will be meted out to every leader or follower who engages in false teaching and evildoing.
God promised perpetual leadership for His people through David which finds ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:21-23 & Romans 3:22). Today, we have Christ as our leader and the Scripture as our guide into the truth (John 8:31-32,36; John 14:6). We have the responsibility to test every spirit that is in operation in our leaders and refuse to listen to the evil ones (Jeremiah 23:16-17, cf. 1 John 4:1). That calls for constant meditation on God’s word so we can readily identify false teachings.
