Scripture Union Daily Guide 22 March 2021, Monday Message
Topic: God is Still on His Throne
Opening Prayer: As I read through this passage dear Lord, let your word bring transformation to my life.
Scripture: Proverbs 21:1-14
Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit? • Is there any warning for me to heed?
It is good to be reminded that God is Sovereign and rules in the affairs of men. He has the final say. What do we learn from vs.2-3? Our motivation should be right before God. In an era in which people are pursuing get-rich quick ventures, the child of God should be different. Avoid shortcuts if you want results that would last (vs.5 & 6).
Let no one deceive you, there will be a day of reckoning (vs.7&8). Answer truthfully; Am I an irritable person who inflicts misery at home? If you are, you are not wise and certainly not pleasing God (v. 9). What is the effect of your behaviour on others (v.10)? We should be guided by the experiences of others. That way, we would not have to repeat their mistakes. We are reminded that God cares about the poor and expects us to show mercy to them.
What do you make of v.14? Does it condone bribery as a way of life? Definitely not! The verse is a statement of fact – a sad commentary on human nature. Bribery is frequently condemned elsewhere in the Bible, e.g. Deuteronomy 16:19; Proverbs 17:23. Let us stand against this evil in a continent where it is endemic!
Practice/Word Application
