TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: PSALM 79:1-13
Question(s) for Reflection
* Q6: Is there any prayer for me to remember?
There are some countries all over the world where Christians are under serious persecution and are powerless to defend themselves. Their churches are defiled and destroyed (vs.1,7), their leaders are imprisoned and killed (v.2), and other believers, young and old, are ravaged, tortured and slaughtered (vs.2-3).
Sometimes the persecution even comes from the government which is supposed to protect their religious rights, and it seems as if their God is powerless to save them (v.10). Psalms such as this one are particularly relevant in their situation. What else can they do but cry to the God of their salvation (vs.5,9)?
The psalmist was mindful of the sins which bring God’s righteous anger upon His people (vs.8-9), and he pleads for God’s mercy based on God’s glory and God’s name (v.9). We must remember that the psalmist was living in Old Testament times, before Jesus Christ came to bring the age of Grace. It is not surprising that he called on God to destroy the enemies (vs.10b,12). What should we do instead (Matthew 5:43-47; Romans 12:17-21)?
