Question(s) for Reflection
* Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Parents sometimes get it wrong! Sometimes they want their daughter to be a doctor or their son to be a lawyer. They make big sacrifices to train the child accordingly, sometimes sending them overseas to train; and they make sure that nothing stands in the way of this ambition. Forgetting God in this calculation, they can easily destroy the child they love!
This is the sorry state in which Saul finds himself. He wanted his son to be king, and nothing must stand in the way. However, compare v.31 with v.33. What happens to all that ambition if the spear had hit Jonathan? This is another proof that demonic spirits can work actively with us when we follow our human agenda instead of God’s.
What should we do instead of dictating a career for our children? Hand them over to God to guide. Let God take over completely and lead them the way He chooses. David and Jonathan are worthy examples of what happens when God is in charge. Jonathan proved himself an all-round and faithful friend to David (cf., Proverbs 18:24; 17:17; 27:10).
Practice/Word Application

Our God, our help in ages past
1 O God, our Help in ages past,
our Hope for years to come,
our Shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal Home.
2 Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
sufficient is Thine arm alone,
and our defense is sure.
3 Before the hills in order stood,
or earth received its frame,
from everlasting Thou art God,
to endless years the same.
4 A thousand ages in Thy sight
are like an evening gone,
short as the watch that ends the night
before the rising sun.
5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream
bears all its sons away;
they fly forgotten, as a dream
dies at the op’ning day.
6 O God, our Help in ages past,
our Hope for years to come,
be Thou our Guard while life shall last,
and our eternal Home!
Closing Prayer
Lord help me to submit completely to your will.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 91:7
“A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.”
