Scripture Union Daily Guide 20th January 2025 – OUTLINE
Leprosy is external to the body and fairly easy to identify. How do you handle issues that can easily be hidden but which all the same pollutes the camp? Adultery is one of such. It is forbidden in God’s law (Exodus 20:14), attracting death penalty for both culprits, not just the woman (Leviticus 20:10).
However, how do you handle a case of suspicion? The law in our passage is no doubt quite harsh and tilted heavily against the woman, the suspect. In the polygamous culture of the time, like the culture in many parts of Africa, the culprit is always the woman (John 8:3-6).
The man can visit as many women as he likes. In this kind of society where the woman has no right, this law protects the woman against spurious accusation by her husband, an accusation that could lead to her instant death. Through it all, the Lord ensures that the process leads to the exoneration of an innocent woman.
For us Christians, however, there is no room for adultery on the part of either party in a marriage (see Hebrews 13:4). And there is no room for undue suspicion of one another. Instead, Christian couples should have confidence in, and respect each other.
