Question(s) for Reflection
* Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
* Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Three times in today’s passage God reminds His priests, “I am the LORD” (vs.8, 15, 21). Find out what else He says about Himself in these verses. God is holy and He is the one who makes people holy (vs.8,21) and sets apart the high priest (v.15). In the New Testament, the bible refers to believers in Jesus Christ as ‘chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation and a people belonging to God’ (1 Peter 2:9; cf. Revelation 1: 6a).
God commanded the priests not to participate in heathen mourning practices (vs.5-6; cf. Deuteronomy 14:1-2). We must be careful at funerals not to involve ourselves in traditions and customs that do not glorify the Lord.
It is God’s command that a priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean (v.1). Reflect on what makes a priest unclean and unfit for service before God. See vs.1-4; 5 &10; 7 &13-15. As God’s ministers today, do we observe holiness in these areas? Notice the similar command for us as New Testament priests (Romans 12:1-2; 1 Peter 1:14-16).
Thank God for the death of Christ which makes all of us worthy to come before God to worship and serve Him whatever our physical or spiritual defects.
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Turn Deuteronomy 14:1-2 into prayer asking that God will help you live in obedience and to be separate from all in the world that do not bring Him Glory
Prayer for the week
* Pray for all Christian Ministries who are called and sent by God to children and young people • Pray for more grace for them so that their work will be more effective among the people they’ve been sent to • Pray that an exceeding great army will arise from these children who are being reached today with the word of God
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 33:12
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.”
