David’s ascension to the throne is the fulfilment of God’s promise. God confirms that by gathering warriors from various tribes to fulfil His purpose of establishing the kingdom under David’s leadership. Did these people understand at this point that they were fulfilling prophecy? David needed to settle down into God’s call and the Lord worked through these people to fulfil His plans.
Notice the unity among the people which was displayed practically by the warriors and other members of the community (v.38). The smallest tribe in terms of numbers exhibited some uniqueness (v. 32). Sometimes we look for numbers and multitude, but this tribe reminds us again that God does not necessarily work with numbers. Also note the distinguishing feature of the sons of Issachar. Others were prepared for battle, but they needed direction and strategies which the sons of Issachar provided. They were able to discern their part in the calling and accomplished it.
Discernment and strategy help us in various assignments in life. Do we sometimes notice lack of direction and strategies among our leaders either within the Christian fold or the political arena? We need more people like the sons of Issachar who can tell the mind of God and provide strategies to make the plans work.
