TOPIC: True rest for the people of God
Opening Prayer: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.
Scripture: Hebrews 4:1 – 13
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow? • Is there any warning for me to heed?
God’s will was that the people of Israel, having been freed from the bondage of slavery in Egypt, should find rest in the land of promise. What hindered Israel from entering God’s rest (vs.2,6)? Though the generation of Israelites who were born in the wilderness eventually entered Canaan under Joshua, nevertheless, long after Joshua, David repeated God’s promise of rest (see Psalm 95:7-8). This indicates that occupation of Canaan was not the complete fulfilment of God’s promise of rest (vs.7-9). That promise ultimately finds fulfilment in Jesus Christ. The real rest that God offers all mankind is salvation in Christ Jesus and eternity with him (v.10). Notice what we are expected to do to enter this rest (vs.11-13; cf. Matthew 11:28). Take note that v.11 is not a call to earn our salvation by works, as is erroneously believed by some. Rather it is an exhortation to embrace God’s salvation-rest by believing the word of God and putting our faith in Christ’s finished work of redemption.
