OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, I request that you help me to encounter you as I meditate on your word.
SCRIPTURE READING – Hosea 6:1-, Hosea 7:7
6:1“Come, let us return to the Lord;
for he has torn us, that he may heal us;
he has struck us down, and he will bind us up.
2 After two days he will revive us;
on the third day he will raise us up,
that we may live before him.
3 Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord;
his going out is sure as the dawn;
he will come to us as the showers,
as the spring rains that water the earth.”
4 What shall I do with you, O Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, O Judah?
Your love is like a morning cloud,
like the dew that goes early away.
5 Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;
I have slain them by the words of my mouth,
and my judgment goes forth as the light.
6 For I desire steadfast love[a] and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
7 But like Adam they transgressed the covenant;
there they dealt faithlessly with me.
8 Gilead is a city of evildoers,
tracked with blood.
9 As robbers lie in wait for a man,
so the priests band together;
they murder on the way to Shechem;
they commit villainy.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing;
Ephraim’s whoredom is there; Israel is defiled.
11 For you also, O Judah, a harvest is appointed.
7:1 when I would heal Israel,
the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed,
and the evil deeds of Samaria,
for they deal falsely;
the thief breaks in,
and the bandits raid outside.
2 But they do not consider
that I remember all their evil.
Now their deeds surround them;
they are before my face.
3 By their evil they make the king glad,
and the princes by their treachery.
4 They are all adulterers;
they are like a heated oven
whose baker ceases to stir the fire,
from the kneading of the dough
until it is leavened.
5 On the day of our king, the princes
became sick with the heat of wine;
he stretched out his hand with mockers.
6 For with hearts like an oven they approach their intrigue;
all night their anger smolders;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
7 All of them are hot as an oven,
and they devour their rulers.
All their kings have fallen,
and none of them calls upon me.
QUESTION FOR MEDITATION
► Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 2nd July 2025 – OUTLINE
Hosea 6:1-3 are rhetorical statements from the people of Israel, knowing very well how God swiftly and surely responds to them whenever they return to Him in repentance. They have sinned, but if they return to the faithful and merciful God in genuine repentance, He who has disciplined them will also forgive and restore them. They can trust the same God whose love never destroys or let go. He will revive them on “the third day”, referring to the immediate deliverance they will experience. He is ever faithful.
Unfortunately, God’s people are still not ready to discontinue their wickedness and return to the Lord. God, who knows their heart and motive, responds to them through Hosea in Hosea 6:6-7. They have not stopped their wickedness. Notice some of the evils they still engage in (Hosea 6:8-7:3). None of our sins is hidden from God. Instead of burying our heads in the sand like the proverbial ostrich, we should heed Hosea’s call, confess our sins, repent of them, and allow Christ to cleanse and restore us (Jeremiah 31:34).
And So:
Let us examine our motives for service to God.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Lord, you do not delight in sacrifice. Help me to be obedient to your will daily.
