Scripture Reading
Jeremiah 11:1-23
Question for Meditation
► Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
The people of Judah and Israel are covenant people. The Lord God who rescued them from Egyptian slavery made a covenant with them at Sinai (Exodus 19:1-8). God promised to bless them and give them the land of Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey. Despite their sins, grumblings and rebellions, the Lord fulfilled His part of the covenant and established them in the Promised Land. Unfortunately, they failed to keep the terms of the covenant. They forsook the Lord and worshipped idols as we saw yesterday (Jeremiah 11:12-13).
Walking outside the covenant in stubborn pursuit of their own way and failing to respond to God’s warning has consequences as clearly stated in the covenant. See Jeremiah 11:8b,11,16-17, cf. Deuteronomy 28:15 ff). God promised to answer when we cry to Him (Psalms 50:15). But we never expect Him to rush to our rescue when we have forsaken Him and refuse to repent and renew our relationship with Him (see Isaiah 54:1-3).
Sacrifices will not suffice (Jeremiah 11:15). Even the intercession of His prophet will be powerless (Jeremiah 11:14).
From Jeremiah 11:18-20, instead of repenting, the people plotted evil against the prophet.
Note
Notice how God reacted in Jeremiah 11:21-23. What warning is there for us today?
