Scripture Union Daily Guide 1st October 2024 – MESSAGE
We read yesterday of how Saul was appointed King in a popular political proclamation. It was the start of a new era for the country, but on the surface, nothing much had changed. The Philistines still dominated portions of Israel like they did in the time of the Judges (v.1). The son of Kish still went to his farm to plough his field like everyone else (v.5).
Although some of the people did not accept the fact that God had chosen him to be the king for all of Israel (10:27; 11:12), the elders of Jabesh knew where to turn for help when trouble came. What was it that actually made the difference (vs.6,7)? Take note of how King Saul was careful not to act alone in v.7. What actions did he take which confirmed his authority as the God-appointed ruler of Israel?
The influence of the Holy Spirit inspired anger in King Saul (v.6). What are the sort of things that should drive us to holy anger as individuals and as communities of God’s people? Some of our countries experience grave insecurity like the people of Jabesh did. What lessons can our leaders learn from this story? Notice how Saul acknowledged God as their source of victory (v.13).
Practice/Word Application
For reflection: “In your anger, do not sin.” (Ephesians 4:26). What were the things that made Jesus Christ angry?
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Ask God for grace never to make Him angry and to vent my anger on the devils and their works.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 31:19
