Judges 20:29-48
QUESTION FOR MEDITATION
► Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Israel had sought the Lord’s face before attacking Benjamin (Judges 20:18). Yet, they were soundly defeated (Judges 20:21). The second time they did not just seek the Lord’s face in a causal manner. They cried to Him with bitter tears (Judges 20:23); but again, they were routed (Judges 20:25).
It was after a night and a day of seeking the Lord’s face with prayer and fasting with more tears that they attacked for the third time (Judges 20:26-28). They also devised a clever plan (Judges 20:29). This time they won, but even then, they lost 30 men (Judges 20:31). What are we to make of this?
Starting with the Fall of our first parents in the Garden of Eden, we live in a fallen world. Very often, innocent people suffer because of the sins of a few evil people. War, any war, is a sad demonstration of our fallen nature. This particular war is a fitting demonstration of the fact. It was started by an immoral man on account of the immoral treatment given to his immoral concubine. The result? Tens of thousands of innocent casualties, widows, and orphans!
