OPENING PRAYER: My dear heavenly Father, as I study your word, let it be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
SCRIPTURE: Zephaniah 3:1‐20
Scripture Union Daily Guide 19 October 2022 Message
Read vs.1‐4? Does this look familiar? Can you see a similarity in the picture of Jerusalem and the situation in many African nations today? Injustice and corruption, oppression and exploitation are widespread in our nations.
Christians are the salt of the world and therefore our attitudes must reflect that of Chris. Although God showed them how to live right (v.5), and punished other nations to show them that sin will not go unpunished, how did the people of Zephaniah’s day respond (vs.6‐7)?
God does not punish to destroy but to correct and purify (vs.9‐10; 2 Peter 3:9). Those who turn from their sins (2:1‐3) will be preserved as a remnant and will enjoy a new life of peace and blessing. What kind of people will be among the remnant (vs.11‐13, 19)?
Zephaniah’s prophecy is not just about Jerusalem, it holds end time implications for us. What encouragement can we find in the promises of vs.14‐18? Despite what may be happening now, we can look forward to the day of Christ’s return, when justice and peace will be restored (vs.19‐20; cf. Revelation 21:1‐4). What a day of joy it will be!
Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?
Practice/Word Application
And So: How does vs.14‐17 speak to your situation today? Turn your understanding into prayers.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• Pray that God should have mercy, restore and revive you, your family and the church.
