TOPIC: Genuine Freedom
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, expose me to your truth as I read your word in Jesus name.
Scripture: Galatians 5:13–26
Reflection
• Is there any command for me to obey?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
Message: Freedom can mean different things to different people. But the kind of freedom in this passage is directed to Christians. Compare v.1 of yesterday’s reading with v.13 of today’s passage. What is the limitation to our freedom according to v.13b? Whereas we are no longer under the Law of Moses, we are under “the law of Christ” which empowers us to love others in fulfilment of the law (See Matthew 22:36-40). The Holy Spirit’s power supersedes the power of the human will, hence, the command to live by the Spirit (v.16). The Spirit of God guides, teaches, counsels, and empowers us to overcome sin. Read vv.19–26 again. What contrast do you find in these passages? Notice the warning in v.21b. Take note of ‘fruit’ and not ‘fruits’ in v.22. It is because each virtue is a component of holiness. The absence of one affects the beauty of the complete fruit. This should prompt us to work out our salvation with undivided commitment. It means being careful how we live, not as unwise but as wise people, making the best of every opportunity because the days are evil. (Eph. 5:15-16; NLT). We need to seek God and understand what his will is evil (Eph. 5: 15-16; NLT). It means continually being filled with the Spirit and walking in step with the same Spirit (v.25).
