Scripture Union Daily Guide 18 September 2025 Outline
Job freely expressed his hopelessness. He felt utterly emotionally and physically drained and thought that death was the only way of escape (Job 17:1,11-16; cf. Job 6:8-13). Our sufferings can make us feel like Job, but we should never think that death is the only escape route. We should always remember that death and the grave are not our end (1 Corinthians 15:54-55). God can help us overcome all our struggles in life (Romans 8:35-39). Who was Job referring to as “mockers” in Job 17:2?
A proverb says, “The person you asked to help blow out the dirt in your eye puts pepper in his mouth, and the tree you thought of leaning on when tired, was covered with thorns.” This was the kind of situation in which Job found himself (Job 17:5a,12). What should we do when those we trust reject, mock, and are hostile instead of providing us succour? What can we learn from Job in Job 17:3,6-9? Let us learn to focus our attention and energy on God and His promises while maintaining our purity, rather than on distractions from men.
