Opening Prayer: Oh Lord, grant me spiritual insight into the truth of your word as I study it.
Scripture: Psalm 119:121–144
Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 17th November 2020 Message:
Ponder over the description of God’s word in vv.129, 138,140. What does it mean to you to learn that God’s “promises have been thoroughly tested” (v.140)? How should this knowledge affect our attitude to God’s Word (vv.127, 136, 139, 140, 143)? Note that the word is without impurity. It is without error in all it declares. It helps us to identify our ways in a world that is filled with confusion, sin and error.
The psalmist also asks God to “teach (him) his decrees”, give him discernment and understanding of his word (vv.124, 125, 135,144). Why these requests? Those who know much of the word of God should still covet to know more; for there is more to be known. The psalmist does not say, “Give me a further revelation,” but, “Give me discernment that I may understand your statutes”. What is revealed, we should desire to understand, and what we know, we should desire to know better. We must go to God for a heart to know.
What is your feeling when people disregard God’s word in the routines of their daily life? Compare your response with those of the Psalmist (vv.126, 136, 139).
⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Practice/Word Application
• What next: Reflect on the reason(s) that will cause “streams of tears to flow from the eyes” of the psalmist (v.136). Are there similar situations in the church and the nation? How do you react to them?
Prayer points
• May your word, Lord Jesus, be unfolded to me that I may gain a deeper understanding and love for it.
• Pray for an understanding of God’s priorities for these times.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Daniel 6:27a
