Scripture Union Daily Guide 17th January 2021 Message:

This chapter makes it very clear that the children of Israel were to abstain from eating blood, (vs.16, 23-25). Both in the Old and New Testament, blood is the symbol of life and it provides the way of salvation. It was the blood on the lintel of the Israelites’ doors that identified them as God’s people and thereby saved their lives when the firstborn sons of Egypt were destroyed (Exodus 12:23). The most important thing in Jewish worship was the blood of the sacrificial animals that gave access to the High Priest to approach the Mercy Seat and which turned God’s eyes away from their sins as individuals and as a nation (Leviticus 4:13-26).

This theme was carried over into the New Testament (e.g. Acts 15:29). But such food laws are no longer relevant for us today (1 Corinthians 8:8). What is eternally relevant is the blood of sacrifice. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7) and gives us access to the Most Holy presence of God Himself (Hebrews 10:19). No wonder it is one of the important symbols Jesus Christ gave to us in His Last Supper.

God’s people were commanded not worship Him like the idol worshippers they replaced in the land (vv.29 -.31). In like manner, we must worship God in an acceptable and different way from unbelievers as we discussed yesterday (John 4: 21 – 24).

Practice/Word Application
• So what? Meditate on 1 Corinthians 11:25
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the blood you shed for me. • Thank God for Jesus who by His death on the cross, took away our curse and granted us access into the blessings of Abraham.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalm 46:1

Bible in One Year: Gen. 41-42; Rom. 14
