Scripture Union Daily Guide 17th August 2024 (Friday) Devotional Message
TOPIC: Divine Instructions For Battles
OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.
SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY: JOSHUA 5:13-6:14
Question(s) for Reflection
* Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
* Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
The Word of God makes it clear that as believers, we are in warfare (cf. Ephesians 6:12). Joshua had a divine encounter with the Commander of the Lord’s army in 5:13-15 just before the Jericho battle. What is the significance? This was a divine empowerment for the battles ahead of Joshua. Jericho’s gates were tightly shut due to fear, but God again assured Joshua of victory and gave him specific step by step instructions on how to obtain that victory. Intimacy with God and obedience to His divine instructions are keys to victory in spiritual battles. Check yourself with these yardsticks.
Joshua issued the same instructions he received from God to the people, and they followed it strictly for seven days. While the people should follow the leader on the premise that the leader is receiving from God, the leader must ensure he is truly receiving from God and not merely giving his own instructions. Note what was used to bring the wall of Jericho down. Battles of life do not always need prayer and fasting.
