Scripture Union Daily Guide – 17 September 2025 | OUTLINE
Job expressed his frustration with his friends and with God. He was tired of listening to the same old sermons (Job 16:2a). We need to know that there is a great difference between mere words and words of comfort. If our words do not express compassion, sympathy, tenderness, and affection, and do not comfort, alleviate, relieve, and help those in pain, they will amount to mere “blowing hot air” (Job 16:3a) and we will be miserable comforters (Job 15:2b). What can we learn from Job in Job 16:4-5? Before we comment on other people’s situations, we should think of how we would want to be treated, if the situation were reversed (Matthew 7:12).
Read Job 16:7-14 again and take note of seven graphic images that Job used to describe how he felt about his suffering. Do we also sometimes say things like these about God? Job said very loudly what many of us say quietly in our hearts. Job pleaded his innocence (Job 16:15-18) and cried out for an advocate (Job 17:19-22). When experiencing unbearable pain, suffering, and repeated tragedies, let’s remember that we have an Advocate who cares (1 Timothy 2:5, Hebrews 7:25).
And so
When you don’t know what to say, don’t say anything! Silence can be golden when it comes to comforting those who are hurting.
