Scripture Union Daily Guide 15th September 2022 Devotional for Thursday

TOPIC: Faith That Works

OPENING PRAYER: Plant my steps in the sure promises of your word today, dear Lord.

SCRIPTURE: Habakkuk 3:1‐19

Scripture Union Daily Guide 15th September 2022 MESSAGE

Habakkuk’s request in v.2 recalls God’s awesome deeds on Israel’s behalf in history and pleads for a renewal of those inspiring days. How we also need a revival of righteousness and the power of God as of old. Though wrath is coming, Habakkuk prayed and believed that mercy would win out.

This is a display of faith. What picture of God can you see in vs.3‐7? Every display of God’s power in the world, nature and our lives is to make us reverence and glorify His name. Vs.8‐15 describe God as a warrior. The sun standing still (v.11) recalls the victory at Gibeon and the sea (v.15) brings to mind the miraculous parting of the Red Sea in the escape from Egypt. (Scripture Union Daily Guide 15th September 2022)

What can we learn from Habakkuk in vs.16‐19? Habakkuk ends his prophecy with worship and a psalm of praise! Though it was not clear how Judah would survive amidst injustice, suffering and judgment, Habakkuk trusts God for the best. Things may be as bad as they can possibly be. The bottom line is not our circumstances, but that God is still in control (v.19).
