Scripture Union Daily Guide – 15 September 2025 | OUTLINE
W.E. Sangster wrote, “Of all the wicked waste that goes on in this world, no waste is more wicked than wasted pain.” Unlike many, Job did not waste his pain. Job’s word reminds us that life on earth is transient, yet full of hardships and uncertainties. Our days are numbered and run out like sand in a sandglass (Job 14:5-6).
Observe three things to which Job compared our lives in Job 14:2,11-12. In Job 14:3-6, Job acknowledged the problem of original sin which makes God’s judgment inescapable for man. But we can thank God for the redemptive sacrifice of Christ through which we have obtained forgiveness.
By contrasting the life of a tree to that of a human (Job 14:7-12), Job was not denying resurrection but emphasizing that man has only one life (Hebrews 9:27). Although pain had eroded his hope away (Job 14:18-22), Job still yearned for a renewal, possibly hinting at a future hope beyond the grave when his body would be completely free from pains (Job 14:14-17).
In the light of the brevity of our lives, how can we live purposefully and responsibly (Psalms 90:12; Romans 13:11-14)?
And So
Do not waste your pains, determine to live purposefully despite the pains and sufferings you may be going through right now, and think of ways to invest your pains. Pray for grace to do this.
