Our African experiences demonstrate convincingly that sorcerers are in contact with the dark spiritual realm in a very real way. It is not surprising that people are generally in awe of the potency of their curses and of their power to do all manner of evil. What is really a shame is that Christians sometimes share in this fear. The Bible does not deny that such forces exist but gives us absolute assurance of the overwhelming power of God.
Did Balaam’s encounter with God make any difference in his life? See Numbers 24:1. Also read Numbers 24:2 to see what happened to him immediately. After he was filled with the spirit of God, the next oracle was a prediction of what was to happen to God’s people (Numbers 24:4,14ff). These prophecies were later fulfilled, (e.g. compare Numbers 24:17-19 with 2 Samuel 8:2-12).
This shows that the fact that someone’s prophecy is fulfilled does not necessarily prove that they are men or women of God! Notice his concluding remark in Numbers 24:9b and his reaction to Balak’s outburst in Numbers 24:11-12. God ensured that Balaam never carried out his evil intentions against His people.
