Scripture Union Daily Guide 14 March 2026 | OUTLINE
Jesus used this parable to address one of the greatest problems of modern man and its dangers; (Luke 12:13-15); the insatiable desire to have more and more things, money, wealth, cars, houses, power, position, pleasure, titles, etc. Jesus gave His verdict about such a lifestyle in Luke 12:14. He used this story, popularly called the Parable of the Rich Fool, to illustrate the danger inherent in greediness. Why did God call this man a fool (Luke 12:20-21)? What can we learn from his mistakes?
i. He had a false sense of security. He thought that possession guarantees the security of his life and future (Luke 12:17-19).
ii. He had wrong desires. He made plans to settle down and enjoy his life without reference to God, the source of life and all blessings (Luke 12:19-20; cf. 1 Timothy 6:17).
iii. He was selfish. He had no plan to share his goods with others (Luke 12:17-18; cf. 1 Timothy 6:18-19).
Jesus is not against planning, saving or enjoying our wealth. His warning is against covetousness, selfishness and hedonism.
Read Luke 12:21 again. Can you say you are rich towards God? See Matthew 6:19-21 for what it means to be rich towards God.
