Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?
The Jews often regarded the Temple as an important object of their worship. When they looked for reasons to accuse Jesus, they included blasphemy against the Temple. Temples, mountains, and centres are merely venues for worship. Regarding them as symbols of deity dilutes true worship of God. Jesus said, “where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (Matthew 18:20)!
Stephen reminds us that, “The Most High does not live in houses made by human hands” (v.48). Although buildings are necessary abodes for worship and teaching, they cannot replace the need to have Jesus in our hearts and God’s Spirit among us (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19). “A time is coming,” Jesus told the Samaritan woman who had a high regard for places of worship, “when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem (the Temple), (John 4:21).
By resisting the Holy Spirit, they lacked the conviction and revelation to recognise God’s Righteous One –Jesus Christ, whose coming was predicted by the Prophets and whom they killed (vv.51–52). Grieving the Holy Spirit or resisting his promptings can cause us to miss God’s plan for our lives.
