TOPIC: Final Destruction And Mercy From A New King
OPENING PRAYER: Lord, let the light of your word shine into my life as I meditate on your word.
SCRIPTURE: 2 Kings 25:13-30
Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
Today’s reading gives us a final account of the fall of Jerusalem: the Babylonians completely ransacked the temple and took away every valuable item (vs.13-17). The remaining people, including the priests, were executed on the orders of the king of Babylon (vs.18-21).
The destruction was total. Nebuchadnezzar appointed Gedaliah as ruler over the remnants in Judah. However, the spirit of rebellion had not left the people and a section conspired, murdered Gedaliah and fled to Egypt (vs.22-26). What do you think was the reason for this development? Not only had Judah fallen but total anarchy was now prevailing as well.
The account reveals a deep sense of despondency – “things had fallen apart, and the center could not hold”. We should not allow this to happen to us in our own lives. The consequences of failing to be faithful to God are unbearable!
The book of Kings however ends on a brighter note. After 37 years in exile, Jehoiachin, the first king to be sent to exile in Babylon was released from prison. Royal favours were extended to him for the rest of his life until his death (vs.27-30). No reasons were assigned for his benevolence. This, however, reminds us of the goodness and mercies of our God. He saves us not because we deserve it but because He is a merciful God.
