Scripture Union Daily Guide 13 April 2020 – I have seen the Lord

Scripture Union Daily Guide 13 April 2020

Topic: I have seen the Lord

Prayer Before Reading: Oh Lord, fill me with the power of the Holy Ghost as I study your word.

Scripture: John 20:11–18

Outline: Take note of Mary’s persistence to know what had happened to the body of her Lord. While the “big brothers” left, she remained at the tomb crying (v.11). What a sincere, love and devotion! Not even the presence of angels appeased her. All she wanted was to see Jesus’ body (vv.12–13).

This teaches us that nobody should take the place of Jesus in our lives and nothing else should satisfy us other than Jesus himself. Though she is sincerely wrong for searching for the living among the dead (Luke 24:5), her persistence paid off eventually. She was the first to see the risen Jesus and commissioned with the comforting news of his resurrection (vv.17&18).

What a great privilege! If we also persist and seek the Lord wholeheartedly, we are sure to find him (Jeremiah 29:13). Mary could not recognise Jesus at first (vv.14–15), perhaps because Jesus deliberately concealed his identity or because Mary’s tears and grieve had blurred vision.

However, at last, she recognised Jesus when he called her by name (v.16). Can you recognise the voice of the Lord when he speaks to you?

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
I have seen the Lord

⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Practice/Word Application
• So what? Are you giving up on the challenges you are facing right now because others are giving up? Make a resolution never to give up until the Lord shows up for you.

Hymn – Oh, the gladness and the glory
1. Oh, the gladness and the glory
Of the tender Easter story,
Christ is risen! Christ is risen!
Do you hear the angels say?
All the bells triumphant ring it,
All the choirs celestial sing it,
And the gentle zephyrs wing it
Thro’ the skies this sacred day.

2. Oh, the wondrous transformation,
Working out the world’s salvation!
Christ, the crucified Redeemer,
Once consigned to darkest gloom,
Changing shadow into splendor,
With His love so sweet and tender,
Son of God, our true defender,
Rising deathless from the tomb.

Prayer Points
