TOPIC: He will be revealed from Heaven

OPENING PRAYER: Grant me grace dear Lord to apply what you will teach me today as I read this passage.

INTRODUCTION TO 2 THESSALONIANS
Paul, Silas and Timothy visited Thessalonica on Paul’s second missionary journey (Acts 17:1‐14). Because of the hostility of the Jews, they stayed for only three weeks. A strong church grew in the city. Paul sent Timothy to see to their welfare and encourage them. In his letters to the church, the Apostle is responding to the information he received from Timothy. On the one hand, Timothy had brought good news of their “faith and love”, their loyalty and steadfastness under persecution. On the other hand, they needed some instruction in godly living, and some correction of their wrong views about the second coming of Jesus. He addressed the latter in his first letter, but the issue still persisted, and that is the main purpose of this second letter.

SCRIPTURE: 2 Thessalonians 1:1‐12

The brethren in the Thessalonian Church faced persecutions, trials (v.4), suffering (v.5), and troubles (v.7). What does this teach us about suffering and the Christian’s attitude to it? See also James 1:2‐4. Despite their situation, Apostle Paul had reasons to thank God for, and boast about, this Church.

Identify the reasons for this in vs.3&4. Will there be any reason to thank God for, or boast about you in similar circumstances? The core of this passage is the fact that the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven (see Acts 1:11). This event is yet to take place and recent global occurrences indicate that it is imminent. Take note of the things that will accompany His coming (see vs.6, 7a, 8‐9).

Other things that will happen when He comes are in v.10. One of the most historic events at His coming is in tomorrow’s reading (2:8). In view of these events, what preparations will you make in anticipation of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ? Paul concludes with prayer. Notice what he prayed about (v.11), and why (v.12)?

☛ Humility to continue in fellowship with God and man to ensure we remain in tune till He comes.

PRAY AGAINST:
⚠ Slumber and tiredness that may occur when we fail to remain awake and alert.
⚠ Allowing our hearts to loose it’s peace because of the tribulation that is in the world.
