Scripture Union Daily Guide – 11 November 2025 OUTLINE
God uses the illustration of how infidelity in human marriages defiles the land to show the people of Judah how much their idolatrous acts have defiled the land and spoilt their relationship with Him (Jeremiah 3:1). They worshipped idols openly and confidently, like brazen prostitutes, who have lost all sense of shame. As a result, the land became spiritually unclean (Jeremiah 3:2). The presence of shrines of idols in every nook and cranny is evidence that the land was defiled (Jeremiah 3:2,13). What were the consequences of their action (Jeremiah 3:3a)?
Lack of rain in an agrarian society means economic disaster, hunger, and violence among others. But instead of repentance how did they respond (Jeremiah 3:3b,4,5)? They belittled their offenses toward God and so they thought they didn’t deserve to be judged.
Jeremiah 3:6-10 show that Israel, the Northern kingdom, was taken into captivity because of their sin against God, and Judah, the Southern Kingdom, rather than learning from the errors of Israel continued in the same sins, worshipping God pretentiously (Jeremiah 3:10). How do you worship God, with total dedication or pretentiously?
