OPENING PRAYER: Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.

SCRIPTURE: Colossians 3:1-11

MESSAGE: In the earlier chapters, Paul established the supremacy of Christ overall and warned against false teachings. Now, he turned his attention to practical Christian living. As believers in Christ, there must be a radical change in our values and convictions (vs.1-4). Note, according to Paul, the reason believers must set their hearts and minds “on things above” (vs.3&4).

To live the Christian life as Christ intended it to be, Paul created two lists of five sins each to be avoided. The first list (v.5) are mostly external sins, like sexual immorality, greed, etc. which we must put to death, or eliminate. The second is sins that damage human relationships. They include anger, etc. (vs.8,9a).

We are able to do these because of what a true Christian is (see vs.9b-10). As we remain intimate with God through the Bible and prayer, our Christian life will be continually renewed. Instead of creating barriers of race, class and wealth, we will affirm our oneness in mutual submission to God and have real joy in Him.

Lord, help me to daily yield to the Holy Spirit so I can live out the life of Christ.
