Scripture Union Daily Guide 10 April 2022 MESSAGE
Our Lord was in deep sorrow here, knowing that one of His close friends was about to betray Him. Notice, however, the preoccupation of the disciples (v.24). This is like what we see among not only our politicians, but also within our churches and Christian communities. What a time for the Lord to still handle this issue without losing His temper for their behaviour. Read vs.31‐32 again.
Why do you think the Lord singled out Peter? It is worth noting that in the Greek, ‘you’ in v.31 is plural, but it is singular in v.32 (see Matthew 26:31‐35). The plan of the devil was to derail all the disciples as he did Judas. Weak as he may however appear, Peter was a ‘General’ in Christ’s army hence Satan’s special focus on him and Christ’s warning. Satan will do everything possible to cause our leaders to fall.
This often has serious destructive effect on many Christians. We thank God because Satan cannot do anything against us unless the Lord permits him (compare Job 1:9‐12). Even when He does permit such trial, our Lord stays firmly by us lest the devil succeeds in destroying us (v.31).
