Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit? • What is God revealing to me in this passage?
God knows exactly what we need and when we need it. Notice how God raises loyal friends and army officers from Saul’s own family to align with David to fulfil God’s purpose in Israel. Why would Saul’s men join David and be loyal to him? God is at work to fulfil His overall plan here. The men may have observed the withdrawal of God’s blessing upon Saul and realised that David is the chosen vessel of God.
Working against him would mean working against God. Do our politicians sometimes work against the purpose of God because of personal gains? Notice what David said to them (v.17). He knew he needed to discern where the people stood. How did he confirm that (v.18)? He handed his battle over to God first and the Lord confirmed this through His spirit and through one of the people (v. 18)?
Notice additional interventions by God (vs.20-22). God raised these men right on time to help when David really needed them. They were courageous and determined to defeat the enemy. It is a reminder that our God is always right on time. He knows what we need and provides in the nick of time.
