Scripture Union Daily Guide – 1 January 2026 | OUTLINE
God’s message did not come to any of the great leaders of that day. It came to John the Baptist, the last but the greatest of God’s prophets who heralded the advent of the Messiah (Luke 3:1-2; cf. Matthew 11:7-15). John’s ministry was foretold by the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 40:3-5). He confronted his audience with a message of change that will lead to repentance and forgiveness of sin. Thank God it is a New Year. Are there areas of your life of which you need to repent and ask for forgiveness to bring the necessary change?
Furthermore, are there resolutions you are making this New Year that will help you to please God? Reflect again on Luke 3:7-9 and compare the scathing message of John with the sermons we receive from our pulpits today and from the modern Tele-evangelists. Consider very seriously the urgency in Luke 3:9 as you enter the New Year. Are there areas of your life that need pruning? Prompt submission to God is key before it becomes too late.
Food for Thought
“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)

Another Year Is Dawning
1. Another year is dawning!
Dear Master, let it be,
In working or in waiting,
Another year with thee.
Another year of leaning
Upon thy loving breast,
Of ever deeper trusting,
Of Quiet, happy rest.
2. Another year of mercies,
Of faithfulness and grace,
Another year of gladness
Enlightened by thy face.
Another year of progress,
Another year of praise,
Another year of proving
Thy presence all the days.
3. Another year of service,
Of witness for thy love;
Another year of training
For holier work above.
Another year is dawning!
Dear Master, let it be,
On Earth or else in Heaven,
Another year for thee!
Closing Prayer
Examine your life, prayerfully consider areas of your life where you should ask for forgiveness and resolve to bring the expected change, so you will live to please God in the New Year.
