Scripture Union Daily Guide – 1 December 2025 | OUTLINE
Jeremiah ridiculed the idols many in his time worshipped considering them a big joke (Jeremiah 10:2-5,8-9). As a lad, I also remember vividly some moulded idols that were erected in front of some houses in my town. These idols remain on the same spot unless moved by their worshippers. Their worshippers erect roofs over them lest they collapse under the torrential rains of those days. Thank God for Christian revivals that swept them away, at least from the courtyards.
Compare these man-made idols with the Lord our God (Jeremiah 10:6-7,11-13). Notice in particular how God is described in v.10b. What sense is in forsaking the creator of wood, clay, metal, etc. and worshipping the things made out of these materials? Jeremiah is right to conclude that anyone who worships such senseless things must himself be senseless.
We hardly see any such ‘gods’ around us today. But does that mean people no longer have idols. By no means! Many have turned to idols of money, political power, knowledge, celebrities, etc. Worshipping or idolising these is as senseless as worshipping carved images.
In Jeremiah 10:17-22, Jeremiah sounds the warning again regarding the consequence of idolatry. This is a warning we should take seriously in the light of modern idolatry. How we should follow Jeremiah’s example and pray for God’s mercy for ourselves and our nation (Jeremiah 10:23-24).
And So
Make vs.23-24 your prayer for today.
