► Q8: Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

Scripture Union Daily Guide Saturday 17th May 2025 OUTLINE

Reflect on the message that the angel of the Lord gave to the Israelites (Judges 2:1-3), thus: • God’s promise to the Israelites (Judges 2:1) .

* What was required/expected of the Israelites (v.2a) .
* Israelites’ disobedience (Judges 2:2b).
* Consequences of the disobedience as enacted by God (Judges 2:3) .

Though the Israelites wept and offered sacrifices to the Lord at the angel’s message, it was a case of too little too late. A complete fault line had already formed, which became full blown after the death of Joshua and his entire generation (Judges 2:8-10). Notice the disheartening description of the Israelites’ repeated behaviour of rebellion, disobedience, backsliding and the punishment that follows (Judges 2:11-19).

How does this mirror the struggles of humanity today? 2 Corinthians 6:14-16 provides a preventive caution to this situation today. Notwithstanding, God showed them mercy whenever they returned to Him in repentance. God’s love and mercy towards His people are unmatched (Lamentations 3:22-23). Yet Judges 2:20-23 reveal how the sin we commit is usually the cause of our woes. Constant backsliding retards our Christian growth and deprives us of the peace and joy that should characterise our life as God’s people.

* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
