TOPIC: Weep and Howl for Your Misery
And a final word to you arrogant rich: Take some lessons in lament. You’ll need buckets for the tears when the crash comes upon you. Your money is corrupt and your fine clothes stink. Your greedy luxuries are a cancer in your gut, destroying your life from within. You thought you were piling up wealth. What you’ve piled up is judgment.
– James 5:1-3 (MSG)
This is a very stern warning to those who rely on money for their satisfaction and who put their faith in wealth. James says they will need buckets for the tears they will shed when the crash comes.
James goes on to say that the workers who have been exploited and cheated are crying out for judgment. He says explicitly that the groans of the workers who have been used and abused are a roar in the ears of the Master Avenger.
God cares deeply how we treat each other. Jesus tells us to treat others as we would like to be treated. Here is a simple rule of thumb for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them! (Luke 6:31 MSG).
Holy Spirit, point out opportunities for me to grab the initiative and treat someone with kindness and love today.
