TOPIC: A Day with Joni ~ Life’s Dash
So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died.
– Genesis 5:27
Do you suppose Methuselah ever got tired of living? Do you think he might of rolled over one morning in his seven hundredth year and said, “I’m just too tired to get up”? Do you think he had trouble bridging the generation gaps? Think he was conversant with the Generation Xers and Millennials in his day? Was he hip? How did he keep up with his great, great, great, great grandchildren?
He lived a lot of years, and yet we really know nothing of him or his lasting impact on the world beyond his mind-boggling lifespan. Perhaps you’ve heard someone share this observation before, but it bears repeating: When you look at a headstone in a cemetery there are two dates – birth and death – separated by a dash. What goes into your dash, that’s what matters!
A life measured by its length alone is a life truly unmeasured. Be careful that your life is not reduced to the marking of time. Every day should count for more than its passing.
O Lord, life is truly a gift from You. You have ordained all my days and even chosen the place of my habitation. I praise You that You both love me and have a purpose for my life. May I realize today’s portion of that purpose and make the most of this day? In Jesus’ name.
