āWhen my life was slipping away, I remembered youāand in your holy temple you heard myĀ prayerāĀ (Jonah 2:7Ā CEV).
When youāre experiencing hopelessness, one of the most important steps you can take is to identify the cause.
In other words, instead of wrestling with a vague sense of hopelessness, try to figure out where itās coming fromābecause your problem isnāt hopelessness. The real problem is whatāsĀ causingĀ your hopelessness.
InĀ Jonah 2:3-6, we discover eight common causes of hopelessness. Take a look and see if any of these root issues feel familiar.
- You feel like youāre in over your head.Ā āYou threw me into the ocean depthsāĀ (Jonah 2:3Ā NLT).
- Youāve hit the bottom.Ā āI sank down to the heart of the seaāĀ (Jonah 2:3Ā NLT).
- You feel out of control and powerless.Ā āI was buried beneath your wild and stormy wavesāĀ (Jonah 2:3Ā NLT).
- You feel overwhelmed.Ā āThe mighty waters engulfed meāĀ (Jonah 2:3Ā NLT).
- You feel rejected.Ā āO Lord, you have driven me from your presenceāĀ (Jonah 2:4Ā NLT).
- You feel remorse and regret.Ā āI thought I had been banished from your presence and would never see your holy Temple againāĀ (Jonah 2:4Ā GNT).
- You feel crushing fear.Ā āI sank beneath the waves, and the waters closed over me. Seaweed wrapped itself around my headāĀ (Jonah 2:5Ā NLT).
- You feel trapped.Ā āI was imprisoned in the earth, whose gates lock shut forever. But you, O Lord my God, snatched me from the jaws of death!āĀ (Jonah 2:6Ā NLT).
When Jonah started talking to God about his hopelessness, God began to heal him.Ā āWhen my life was slipping away, I remembered youāand in your holy temple you heard my prayerāĀ (Jonah 2:7Ā CEV).
