36 At Joppa there was a certain disciple named [a]Tabitha, which is translated [b]Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did. 37 But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. 38 And since Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them.
39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40 But Peter put them all out, and knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up.
OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
As a church, we partner with individuals and organisations to empower young people through skill acquisition programmes, vocational and technical training, and entrepreneurial engagements in some of our rehabilitation centres for wayward children. This is because the world needs empowered people who will be able to empower others through their good deeds and acts of kindness.
Dorcas had a ministry of giving to the widows. She made clothes for them to cover their nakedness. One day, she became sick and died, but the people persuaded Peter to pray for her to come back to life – they weren’t ready to lose their benefactor. Today, many young people are striving to be seen on television and social media. They do all kinds of things to get invited to certain events because they seek recognition.
My dear child, rather than seek fame, be like Dorcas who became famous because she had an impact on the people in her immediate environment. You also can make an impact in your immediate environment by giving clothes, money, knowledge, and help to those who need them. This way, you will be sowing good seeds, and God will ensure that you surely reap rewards.
