TOPIC: Lessons from the Life of Hezekiah (1)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 2 Kings 16:1-4, 20

1 In the seventeenth year of Pekah son of Remaliah, Ahaz son of Jotham king of Judah began to reign.
2 Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD his God.

3 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel and even sacrificed his son in the fire, engaging in the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.

4 He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree.

20 Ahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Hezekiah his son succeeded him as king.

MEMORY VERSE
Ezekiel 18:4 – “Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.”

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE

MFM DEVOTIONAL 2024 FOR TODAY MESSAGE

Today, we want to begin a study on the life of King Hezekiah. Who was he? Why did he succeed and what were his pitfalls? These and many more will be answered for our learnings in the next few days.

Hezekiah was a son of King Ahaz of Judah and Abi (2 King 18:1-2). Ahaz served the devil with all his might. It was recorded that he walked according to the abominations of the heathen (2 Kings 16:2-3). As an heir to this wicked and abominable king, one would expect Hezekiah to follow the footsteps of his father. Hezekiah never saw his father pray to God, he never saw him read the Bible, he never saw him do any good thing except abominations.

So, it is not out of place to think that like the father, Hezekiah too will be mostly abominable and wicked. Surprisingly, when he succeeded his father, he served God like David, his forbear. He brought the Israelites back to the worship of the one and only true God. He reformed the land and caused a revival.

What could have been the secret? It could probably have been the role his mother played in his life. Abi was said to be the daughter of Zechariah. Although not much is said about her, she must have influenced her child in the way of God. She must have vowed that though she married an evil man, her children will not continue to wear such evil shoes. This speaks volume of the fact that the influence of mother in a child’s life cannot be overemphasized.

Hezekiah changed the narratives. No matter the amount of sermon by his mother, if he had chosen to go the way of the heathen like his father, nothing could have stopped him. But he chose the God of Abraham, he chose life over death despite his idolatrous background and God was with him all through his endeavours. God said in the book of Ezekiel that children will no longer be punished for the sins of their forbears. Whoever sins shall die.

Beloved, your parents might have served the devil and you may not have come from a Christian background, but you can change the trend. You don’t have to continue to wear the evil shoes of your forefathers. You can deal with the iniquity and weakness of your father’s house. Stop giving the excuses of ‘that is the way things are in our family’. You can stop evil narrative with the help of God, if you are willing. Joshua said, “Choose you this day who you will serve but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” Choose life!
